Abstract: The Darjeeling Himalaya, located in eastern part of the Himalaya biodiversity hotspot in India, is known for its diverse vegetation. The varying climatic conditions along the elevational gradient provide suitable habitats for supporting a rich flora in the region. We provide an updated checklist of vascular epiphytes in Darjeeling Himalaya. A total of 239 vascular epiphyte species belonging to 93 genera and 38 families have been recorded from the region, which include holoepiphytes, hemiepiphytes, facultative and accidental epiphytes. Orchidaceae was the largest family with 70 species, followed by Polypodiaceae comprising 42 species. We make available baseline biodiversity information on vascular epiphytes of the study area and provide details on taxonomic diversity and distribution in terms of vegetation types and along the elevational gradient. We also provide photographs to facilitate field identification.

New records of four tree species in the state of Paraná, southern Brazil: Canellaceae, Lauraceae, Melastomataceae, and Myristicaceae https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/63158/ Check List 17(3): 859-872

DOI: 10.15560/17.3.859

Authors: Marcelo Leandro Brotto, Rafael Rosenstock Völtz

Abstract: The teams of Escola de Florestas de Curitiba (EFC) and Museu Botânico Municipal (MBM) herbaria, Curitiba, Brazil, made field expeditions between the years 2017 and 2019 to increase the knowledge of the flora of Paraná state, southern Brazil. Four new records of tree species are reported: Cinnamodendron occhionianum F.Barros & J.Salazar (Canellaceae), Cryptocarya botelhensis P.L.R.Moraes (Lauraceae), Henriettea glabra (Vell.) Penneys, Michelang., Judd et Almeda (Melastomataceae) and Virola gardneri (A.DC.) Warb. (Myristicaceae). The genus Henriettea is recorded from the state of Paraná for the first time. All four species occur in the Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil.

First record of Piper robustipedunculum Yunck. (Piperaceae) in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/53996/ Check List 16(5): 1149-1152

DOI: 10.15560/16.5.1149

Authors: George Azevedo de Queiroz, Elsie Franklin Guimarães, Cassia Monica Sakuragui

Abstract: Piper L. is the largest genus of Piperaceae with about 2,000 species worldwide. Brazil is home to 466 of these species. They are found mainly in the Atlantic and Amazonian forests. This is the first record of Piper robustipedunculum Yunck in the state of Pernambuco, a species which was previously considered restricted to the state of Bahia. We consulted the herbaria CEN, HAMAB, HEPH, IBGE, IPA, MAC, R, RB, RFFP, UB, UFP, UFMT, UPCB and the virtual speciesLink and Reflora databases. Additionally, we elaborated a description and a distribution map to the species.

Nymphaea alba var. rubra Lönnr. (Nymphaeaceae): a new record for the aquatic flora of Kashmir Himalaya, India https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/53029/ Check List 16(4): 841-845

DOI: 10.15560/16.4.841

Authors: Afrozah Hassan, Shugufta Rasheed, Anzar A. Khuroo, Ather Masoodi, Irshad A. Nawchoo

Abstract: Nymphaea alba var. rubra Lönnr. is reported for the first time from Dal Lake, Kashmir Himalaya, India. The taxonomic identification was confirmed based on rhizome, leaf and flower characters. A brief description and photographic illustrations of N. alba var. rubra are provided to validate the new distribution record for aquatic flora of this Himalayan region. A comparison of N. alba var. rubra with its allied taxon, N. alba var. alba, is provided to facilitate field identification.

Private environmental consultancy reveals five genera and ten species of angiosperms new to Rio Grande do Norte state, northeastern Brazil https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/25463/ Check List 14(2): 439-451

DOI: 10.15560/14.2.439

Authors: Edweslley Otaviano de Moura, Valdeci Fontes de Sousa, Arthur de Souza Soares, Leonardo M. Versieux

Abstract: New occurrences of 10 species of angiosperms from Rio Grande do Norte state are reported. These data were collected by an environmental consultancy prior to the establishment of a wind farm. These records demonstrate the presence of knowledge gaps in the Caatinga flora of the state and show how an environmental consultancy can positively contribute towards the documentation of biodiversity in areas prior to their modification by human activities. In particular, at a time when the Brazilian Congress is discussing the elimination of environmental studies for licensing new developments, these new occurrence data highlight the importance of environmental studies.

Exotic woody plants in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, southernmost Brazil https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/24117/ Check List 14(1): 203-211

DOI: 10.15560/14.1.203

Authors: Tiago Schuch Lemos Venzke, Vilmar Luciano Mattei, Maria Antonieta Décio da Costa

Abstract: Exotic species are spreading in various parts of the planet and sometimes becoming biological invaders. A floristic survey was carried out to find exotic trees, shrubs, and climbers in different communities in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The traversal method was used at 26 sites. The richness totaled 26 species in 22 genera and 17 families. There are 19 trees, 5 arborescents, 1 shrub, and 1 climber. Most of the exotic species are already naturalized in the study area. Between 1 and 10 individuals sporadically occur at each site. For species of characteristically invasive exotic plants were observed, including 3 trees (Pinus elliottii Engel, Pinus taeda L. Engelm., and Pittosporum undulatum Vent.) and 1 shrub (Ulex europaeus L.). A continuous monitoring of exotic flora is needed to eliminate or control invasive plant species and to avoid economic and ecological damage to ecosystems.
