Authors: Rafael Scherrer Mathielo, Diego Henrique Santiago, Thiago Marcial De Castro, Flávia Guimarães Chaves

Abstract: We report the rediscovery of two species of rare snake in Espírito Santo state, Brazil: Apostolepis longicaudata Gomes, 1921 (also rare elsewhere in Brazil) and Drymoluber brazili (Gomes, 1918). Apostolepis longicaudata has gone undetected in Espírito Santo for 66 years and Drymoluber brazili for 46 years. Espírito Santo state has only 10% of its forests remaining, and so the rediscovery of these forest‑dwelling species emphasizes the importance of small forest remnants for the conservation. These species have been assessed as Critically Endangered and Endangered in Espírito Santo state.

DOI: 10.15560/19.6.847

Authors: Randy L. Powell, Cord B. Eversole, Luis Rolando Rivas, Ashton V. Crocker, Paola De la Quintana

Abstract: Little information for Eunectes beniensis (Dirksen, 2002) (Serpentes, Boidae) exists in the scientific literature and museum data. We review the natural history, diet, reproduction, distribution of this species and discuss its identifying characteristics. We present new records and discuss the species’ distribution in Bolivia. As reported in the previous literature, the geographic locality data of the holotype and paratypes are incorrect. We report corrected data for these specimens and update knowledge of the species’ distributional status and natural history by summarizing novel and existing data from the entirety of this species’ known range. We provide a distribution map based on vouchered museum specimens.

Confirmation of the presence of the Striped Lizard Eater, Mastigodryas dorsalis (Bocourt, 1890) (Squamata, Colubridae), in Mexico https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/89891/ Check List 19(1): 115-125

DOI: 10.15560/19.1.115

Authors: Jorge Arturo Hidalgo-García, Roberto Luna-Reyes, Adam G. Clause, Rubén Alonso Carbajal-Márquez, José Jesús Sigala-Rodríguez, Luis Antonio Muñoz-Alonso

Abstract: The snake Mastigodryas dorsalis (Bocourt, 1890) is generally considered absent from Mexico, but a few sources indicate otherwise. Herein we resolve this issue by re-examining a historical specimen and by reporting new records for M. dorsalis in Chiapas, Mexico. These records extend the known distribution of the species 87 km northwest of the nearest pre-existing record in Guatemala. Additionally, based on these new records and an exhaustive literature review, we present an updated distribution for the species and revise its known elevational range to 300–2110 m. First record of Tantilla flavilineata Smith & Burger, 1950 (Squamata, Colubridae) for Puebla, Mexico https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/90965/ Check List 18(5): 979-982

DOI: 10.15560/18.5.979

Authors: Angel I. Contreras-Calvario, Rene Avalos-Vela, César Orozco, Víctor H. Jiménez-Arcos

Abstract: We record Tantilla flavilineata Smith & Burger, 1950, for the first time in the state of Puebla, Mexico. It was previously considered endemic to a small region of the state of Oaxaca. With this record, we extend the known distribution 100 km north-northwestward in a straight line. We also provide scales counts and description of the coloration in life of a female specimen. The geographic distribution of T. flavilineata appears to be restricted to mid-elevations in various oak woodlands which have been limited in area by agriculture. More information on its natural history, ecology, and geographic distribution is needed to develop conservation strategies for this rare snake.

The geographic distribution of Atractus lehmanni (Boettger, 1898) (Serpentes, Colubridae, Dipsadinae) in Colombia, and clarification of its status and type locality in Ecuador https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/81175/ Check List 18(4): 815-820

DOI: 10.15560/18.4.815

Authors: John G. Himes, Alejandro Arteaga, Luis Enrique Vera-Pérez, Kevin M. Enge

Abstract: Atractus lehmanni (Boettger, 1898), Lehmann’s Ground Snake, (Serpentes, Colubridae, Dipsadinae), was described by Boettger (1898) from Cuenca, Ecuador. We examined records of snakes labeled as A. lehmanni to determine if they fit the original description of this species. The results of our record examinations, in conjunction with long-term field surveys and a review of Friedrich Carl Lehmann’s travel logs, indicate that A. lehmanni occurs in the Cordilleras Central and Occidental of Colombia. Conversely, this species is apparently absent from Ecuador, where records of this species are in error or based on misidentifications.

A new locality for the rare Guerreran Centipede Snake, Tantilla coronadoi Hartweg, 1944 (Squamata, Colubridae), with comments on morphological variation https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/73773/ Check List 17(6): 1745-1749

DOI: 10.15560/17.6.1745

Authors: Ricardo Palacios Aguilar, Samuel A. Santa Cruz Padilla, Víctor H. Jiménez Arcos

Abstract: We record the third known specimen of Tantilla coronadoi Hartweg, 1944 from Guerrero, Mexico. Our new record extends this species’ distribution by 90 km and to a new Mexican biogeographic province (Balsas Basin). The morphological similarity between this and the two previously known specimens supports the validity of the taxon, and otherwise points to the possible presence of an undescribed taxon on the coast of Guerrero. Additional fieldwork yielding a larger series of this and other infrequently encountered species may enable a better understanding of their distribution, natural history, ecology, and conservation.

Out of Indochina: confirmed specimen record and first molecular identification of Psammophis indochinensis Smith, 1943 (Squamata, Psammophiidae) from Bali, Indonesia https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/71726/ Check List 17(6): 1521-1531

DOI: 10.15560/17.6.1521

Authors: Nia Kurniawan, Luhur Septiadi, Muhammad Fathoni, Gigih Setia Wibawa, Panupong Thammachoti

Abstract: Psammophis indochinensis Smith, 1943 was reported in the eastern Java and Bali of Indonesia despite its primary geographic range being in the Indochina region. We confirm its presence in Bali based on a newly collected specimen and provide morphological and genetic data. The specimen was found in a lowland, urban areas near open grassland habitat, which confirms the distribution of P. indochinensis along the northern coast of Bali. We note some character aberrations in the supralabials compared to Thailand specimens, suggesting an extended character. The basal clade position of P. indochinensis raises the possibility of an intercontinental dispersal scenario of this African-origin snake.

A herpetological survey of Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/58064/ Check List 17(1): 27-38

DOI: 10.15560/17.1.27

Authors: Dillon Jones, Bethany Foshee, Lee Fitzgerald

Abstract: Urban herpetology deals with the interaction of amphibians and reptiles with each other and their environment in an urban setting. As such, well-preserved natural areas within urban environments can be important tools for conservation. Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary is an 18-acre wooded sanctuary located west of downtown Houston, Texas and is the headquarters to Houston Audubon Society. This study compared iNaturalist data with results from visual encounter surveys and aquatic funnel traps. Results from these two sources showed 24 species belonging to 12 families and 17 genera of herpetofauna inhabit the property. However, several species common in surrounding areas were absent. Combination of data from community science and traditional survey methods allowed us to better highlight herpetofauna present in the park besides also identifying species that may be of management concern for Edith L. Moore.

Mapping local and regional distribution of Lygophis paucidens Hoge, 1952 (Serpentes, Dipsadidae), an elusive snake from the sandy savannas of Brazil and Paraguay https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/38204/ Check List 16(1): 75-81

DOI: 10.15560/16.1.75

Authors: Filipe Alexandre Cabreirinha Serrano, João Paulo dos Santos Vieira-Alencar, Juan Camilo Diaz-Ricaurte, Cristiano de Campos Nogueira

Abstract: Lygophis paucidens Hoge, 1952 is a rare Neotropical snake, previously mapped using only a few individuals in five localities. Herein we update and discuss the distribution and conservation status of L. paucidens within major Neotropical ecoregions, providing previously unavailable data on distribution and habitat use. We compiled and mapped point locality records from literature and museum specimens, complemented by field studies in three localities. We used those records to map the species Extent of Occurrence (EOO) and Area of Occupancy (AOO), two range-related metrics of central relevance for conservation. We recovered 52 records from 46 vouchered specimens and six field records, distributed in 35 individual point localities, all within the diagonal of open vegetation in South America, with most records in cerrado savannas with sandy soils. Lygophis paucidens is likely a psammophilous species, which might explain its occurrence in savanna enclaves in forested ecoregions and its potentially discontinuous distribution. This knowledge is, therefore, useful in aiding future conservation assessments.
