Abstract: During a field expedition in 2020, we recorded specimens of an invasive platy fish, Xiphophorus maculatus, in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. This new occurrence, in the Municipality of São Luis, is only the second time that this non-native species has been found in northeastern Brazil. We provide an updated list of all invasive species recorded from the island of São Luís, highlighting the negative impacts they may confer for the native biodiversity.

Range extension of a small livebearer fish, Poecilia scalpridens (Garman, 1895) (Cyprinodontiformes, Poeciliidae): a new record for the Jari river drainage, Amapá, Brazilian Amazon https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/68106/ Check List 17(4): 1081-1087

DOI: 10.15560/17.4.1081

Authors: Pedro Henrique Negreiros de Bragança, Felipe Polivanov Ottoni, Cecile de Souza Gama, Elisabeth Henschel

Abstract: Recent field expeditions in the Jari river drainage, in addition to examination of uncatalogued poeciliids, allowed the identification of specimens as Poecilia (Pamphorichthys) scalpridens (Garman, 1895). The known range of this species includes lakes and igarapés in the lower reaches of tributaries near the main channel of the Amazon River between Parintins and the mouth of the Tapajós River. Here, we expand the range of P. scalpridens by about 300 km. We provide the main diagnostic characters of P. scalpridens to facilitate identification of specimens collected in future field surveys.

The fish fauna of the upper Piraí drainage, a transposed mountain river system in southeastern, Brazil https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/29901/ Check List 15(1): 235-247

DOI: 10.15560/15.1.235

Authors: Victor de Brito, Paulo Andreas Buckup

Abstract: An annotated checklist of the ichthyofauna from the upper Piraí river drainage is provided. The Piraí river was a major right-bank tributary of the Paraíba do Sul river, but it has been artificially diverted to the coastal Guandu river system in southeastern Brazil to generate electric power and water for the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro. Based on our field sampling of 23 sites, 32 species belonging to 24 genera and 12 families were collected in 6 headwater tributaries of the Piraí river between 2009 and 2016. Phalloceros harpagos (Lucinda, 2008), Astyanax intermedius (Eigenmann, 1908), and Neoplecostomus microps (Steindachner, 1877b) were the most abundant and most widely distributed species in the samples. The sampled ichthyofauna is mostly composed by species from the Paraíba do Sul basin. Eight species are reported for the first time in the upper Piraí drainage, showing the importance of continuous ichthyofaunal surveys of fish in remaining areas of Atlantic Forest.

Geographic distribution of Phalloceros Eigenmann, 1907 (Cyprinodontiformes, Poeciliidae) in the Ilha Grande Bay Hydrographic Region, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/31557/ Check List 15(1): 181-192

DOI: 10.15560/15.1.181

Authors: Igor Cavalcanti de Araújo Souto-Santos, Gustavo Andrés Ferraro, William Bryan Jennings, Gabriela Lucia da Silva Vergara, Paulo Andreas Buckup

Abstract: The diversity and geographic distribution of Phalloceros Eigenmann, 1907 in the Ilha Grande Bay Hydrographic Region, in southeastern Brazil, is investigated. Examination of 81 samples revealed the presence of 5 species in the region: Phalloceros anisophallos Lucinda, 2008, P. aspilos Lucinda, 2008, P. enneaktinos Lucinda, 2008, P. harpagos Lucinda, 2008, and P. tupinamba Lucinda, 2008. Phalloceros harpagos and P. tupinamba are recorded for the first time in the area. The geographic ranges of P. anisophallos and P. enneaktinos are expanded. The 5 species belong to 3 distinct morphologies of the female urogenital papilla. Species from these distinct morphological lineages may occur sympatrically, but species within the same lineage are always allopatric. A key for the identification of these species is provided.

Ichthyofauna from three streams of the lower Iguatemi River in the upper Paraná river basin, Brazil https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/23095/ Check List 14(2): 363-378

DOI: 10.15560/14.2.363

Authors: Valéria Flávia Batista-Silva, Augusto Frota, Elaine Antoniassi Luiz Kashiwaqui, Milza Celi Fedatto Abelha, Dayani Bailly, Éder André Gubiani, Weferson Júnio da Graça

Abstract: The ichthyofauna from 3 streams (Água Boa, Perobão, and Santa Maria) to the lower Iguatemi River were inventoried, which is located in the upper Paraná river basin, in Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Sites in the upper, intermediate, and lower portions of each stream were quarterly electrofished from March to December 2008. All sampled fish (n = 6,816 individuals) represented 43 species of 5 orders, and 16 families. The most abundant species was Phalloceros harpagos (63.5%), followed by Astyanax aff. paranae (10.6%), Hypostomus ancistroides (5.9%), Gymnotus inaequilabiatus (3.4%), and Knodus moenkhausii (2.7%). Despite the high ichthyofauna richness in the lower portion of Iguatemi River, the need to implement and/or expand soil conservation practices and riparian forest restoration is of utmost importance to maintain these populations in the long term.

Morphology and genetics reveal the occurrence of Girardinus falcatus (Eigenmann, 1903) (Cyprinodontiformes, Poeciliidae) in eastern Cuba https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/22949/ Check List 13(6): 1059-1065

DOI: 10.15560/13.6.1059

Authors: Sheila Rodríguez-Machado, José L. Ponce de León, Didier Casane, Erik García-Machado

Abstract: Girardinus is a Cuban genus of poeciliid fishes. It comprises 7 freshwater-restricted species most of them inhabiting specific ecosystems or regions within the island. Girardinus falcatus, the Gold-bellied Topminnow, is common in lowlands of western and central Cuba but thought not to be present in the East. Herein we provide the first wellsupported evidence of the occurrence of this species in eastern Cuba. Sixteen specimens were collected and identified primarily by body shape and coloration, and corroborated by gonopodial morphology and by sequences of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b.

Ichthyofauna of the Reserva Biológica Guaribas and surrounding areas, state of Paraíba, Brazil https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/21379/ Check List 13(5): 581-590

DOI: 10.15560/13.5.581

Authors: Rafaela Santos Dias Gouveia, Giordânya Lays de Almeida Lira, Telton Pedro Anselmo Ramos, Elvio Sergio Figueredo Medeiros

Abstract: The removal and management of the Atlantic Forest over the past centuries caused the destruction of most of this ecosystem. Among the few remaining areas of Atlantic Forest north of the São Francisco River is the Reserva Biológica (REBIO) Guaribas. This study inventoried the ichthyofauna of the REBIO Guaribas (Mamanguape, Paraíba) and its surroundings. Two streams were sampled bimonthly (1 within the REBIO and the other adjacent to it) and another 11 additional sites were sampled once, resulting in 18 species of fish (7 families and 7 orders). Characiformes was the most representative order, with12 species. This species list is an important tool for impact assessments as well as conservation and management plans, given the current state of knowledge about Brazilian rivers and streams, especially those of the northeastern Atlantic Forest.
