Abstract: Hyphessobrycon langeanii was originally described as endemic to the upper Araguaia river basin, Brazil. However, our analysis of several Hyphessobrycon specimens collected in the Correntes river basin and another tributary of the Itiquira River in Mato Grosso state (both belonging to the Paraguay river basin) reveals the first verified record of H. langeanii from this basin and from the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso. The objective of this study is to provide a novel record of H. langeanii from the basin of the Paraguay River and from the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. We compare the newly discovered populations with the populations in the Araguaia river basin, and we also provide a brief discussion on the biogeography of this species.

Ichthyofauna associated with sandy beaches of the rio Machado, tributary of the rio Madeira, northern Brazil https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/71199/ Check List 17(6): 1593-1600

DOI: 10.15560/17.6.1593

Authors: Igor David da Costa, Natalia Neto dos Santos Nunes, Ilana Rosental Zalmon

Abstract: The rio Machado is an large tributary of the rio Madeira, and investigations of the ichthyofauna are urgent given the current high threat of habitat loss on account of a hydroelectric plant under construction. Our inventory quantified 9,544 specimens, representing four orders and 38 species. Our study provides an unprecedented list of fish species from a poorly studied South American basin. This basin, which is considered one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, presents high endemism, few cases of co-existence of phylogenetically related lineages, low species diversity, and few species occurrences with wide distribution.

Distribution modeling of Psellogrammus kennedyi (Eigenmann, 1903) and new records in the Lower Paranapanema River, Brazil https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/68371/ Check List 17(5): 1277-1284

DOI: 10.15560/17.5.1277

Authors: Lucas Ribeiro Jarduli, Alan Deivid Pereira, Diego Azevedo Zoccal Garcia, João Daniel Ferraz, Iago Vinicios Geller, Mario Luís Orsi

Abstract: Understanding the potential distribution of non-native species can be an important tool in preventing biological invasions. We recorded for the first time Psellogrammus kennedyi, a small non-native characiform, in the Lower Paranapanema River, Brazil. According to environmental variables and prediction modeling, the species presents high potential distribution in the Upper Paraná river basin. The model used herein is an efficient tool to determine where non-native species may be able to establish. This approach can be used as a preventive measure, once the control and eradication measures are often ineffective and uneconomical.

The fish fauna of the upper Piraí drainage, a transposed mountain river system in southeastern, Brazil https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/29901/ Check List 15(1): 235-247

DOI: 10.15560/15.1.235

Authors: Victor de Brito, Paulo Andreas Buckup

Abstract: An annotated checklist of the ichthyofauna from the upper Piraí river drainage is provided. The Piraí river was a major right-bank tributary of the Paraíba do Sul river, but it has been artificially diverted to the coastal Guandu river system in southeastern Brazil to generate electric power and water for the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro. Based on our field sampling of 23 sites, 32 species belonging to 24 genera and 12 families were collected in 6 headwater tributaries of the Piraí river between 2009 and 2016. Phalloceros harpagos (Lucinda, 2008), Astyanax intermedius (Eigenmann, 1908), and Neoplecostomus microps (Steindachner, 1877b) were the most abundant and most widely distributed species in the samples. The sampled ichthyofauna is mostly composed by species from the Paraíba do Sul basin. Eight species are reported for the first time in the upper Piraí drainage, showing the importance of continuous ichthyofaunal surveys of fish in remaining areas of Atlantic Forest.

DOI: 10.15560/13.5.581

Authors: Rafaela Santos Dias Gouveia, Giordânya Lays de Almeida Lira, Telton Pedro Anselmo Ramos, Elvio Sergio Figueredo Medeiros

Abstract: The removal and management of the Atlantic Forest over the past centuries caused the destruction of most of this ecosystem. Among the few remaining areas of Atlantic Forest north of the São Francisco River is the Reserva Biológica (REBIO) Guaribas. This study inventoried the ichthyofauna of the REBIO Guaribas (Mamanguape, Paraíba) and its surroundings. Two streams were sampled bimonthly (1 within the REBIO and the other adjacent to it) and another 11 additional sites were sampled once, resulting in 18 species of fish (7 families and 7 orders). Characiformes was the most representative order, with12 species. This species list is an important tool for impact assessments as well as conservation and management plans, given the current state of knowledge about Brazilian rivers and streams, especially those of the northeastern Atlantic Forest.
