Abstract: The occurrence of three species belonging to the small coenobia forming green algae Desmodesmus and Didymocystis is reported from the northernmost part of Lake Tanganyika, East Africa. During a monitoring between September 2011 and October 2013 the highest number of cells of Desmodesmus bicellularis and Didymocystis comasii were observed in August and September, at the end of the dry season. On the other hand, the third taxon, Didymocystis cf. inermis, was only sporadically observed between September 2011 and March 2012. According to existing databases, it should be the first records from Africa of these three species. However, D. bicellularis (as Didymocystis bicellularis) was already reported in 2003 in phytoplankton samples of the pelagic zone from more southern located places in Lake Tanganyika.

Dinoflagellates in tropical estuarine waters from the Maraú River, Camamu Bay, northeastern Brazil https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/32768/ Check List 15(5): 951-963

DOI: 10.15560/15.5.951

Authors: Caio Ceza da Silva Nunes, Sylvia Maria Moreira Susini-Ribeiro, Kaoli Pereira Cavalcante

Abstract: Dinoflagellates display great diversity in tropical regions and play an important role in the complex microbial food webs of marine and brackish environments. The goal of this study is to identify planktonic dinoflagellates and their distribution in the estuary of the Maraú River, Camamu Bay, state of Bahia, in a region with increasing use of shellfish farming. Samples were carried out monthly from August 2006 to July 2007 at four stations along the estuary. Plankton was sampled with a 20 μm mesh net. We identified 20 dinoflagellate species. The greatest species richness was observed in the genera Protoperidinium (five spp.), Tripos (four spp.), and Prorocentrum (three spp.). Based on literature, six species were classified as potentially harmful: Akashiwo sanguinea, Dinophysis caudata, Gonyaulax spinifera, Prorocentrum micans, Scrippsiella cf. acuminata, and Tripos furca. Protoperidinium venustum was recorded for the first time in coastal waters of Bahia.

First record of a cyanobacterium Petalonema alatum (Borzì ex Bornet & Flahault) Correns (Cyanobacteria, Scytonemataceae) in Africa https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/27311/ Check List 14(5): 827-832

DOI: 10.15560/14.5.827

Authors: Louis Maree, Sanet Janse van Vuuren, Anatoliy Levanets, Jonathan Taylor

Abstract: Petalonema alatum (Borzì ex Bornet & Flahault) Correns is a nitrogen fixing, subaerial cyanobacterium characterized by a blue-green trichome surrounded by a very broad, lamellated mucous sheath. It typically grows on dripping limestone rocks in temperate regions, but it has also been observed in some calcareous lakes and limestone springs. Although the species is known to be present in the Americas, Europe and Asia, no records could be found for its presence in Africa. In the last decade, it was sampled twice from rock surfaces in cave overhangs in the Free State Province of South Africa, representing a first record of its presence in Africa. A taxonomic description, microscope images as well as detailed geographical distributions of P. alatum are provided.
