Abstract: Sylvilagus andinus (Thomas, 1897) is a highland lagomorph from the Ecuadorean Paramos. Its distribution was tentatively believed to extend to northwestern Peru on the basis of ecological niche modeling and the inclusion of the Peruvian S. capsalis Thomas, 1913 as a synonym. Here, we confirm the occurrence of S. andinus in Peru by a morphological examination of seven new records from northwestern Peru and one new record from Ancash department in central Peru.

Non-volant mammal inventory of western Mongolian-Manchurian Grassland Ecoregion: a biogeographic crossroad worth preserving https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/46905/ Check List 16(2): 287-301

Abstract: The extensive Mongolian grasslands hosts a high variety of micro-habitats which wildlife uses as corridors that enable species to expand their range. Between May 2017 and March 2018, we conducted an intensive survey in the Mongolian-Manchurian Grassland Ecoregion using camera trapping, field transects, live trapping and opportunistic observations, in mountain outcrops, grass steppe and sand dune habitats across seasons. Our aim was to compile the first satisfactory inventory of mammals based on scientific methods for a diverse landscape in the Mongolian provinces of Tov and Dundgovi. Furthermore, our research seeks to fill in knowledge gaps on species distribution and range expansions in the endangered west Mongolian-Manchurian Grassland ecoregion and identify biodiversity hotspot areas encompassed in this biogeographic crossroad. We recorded 31 species of non-volant mammals, including a globally Endangered species and two Near Threatened species, according to the IUCN Red List, and three species listed in Appendix II of CITES.

First record of Lepus timidus (Linnaeus, 1758) from Novaya Zemlya, Russian Arctic (Lagomorpha, Leporidae) https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/47485/ Check List 16(1): 59-61

DOI: 10.15560/16.1.59

Authors: Vitaly M. Spitsyn, Nikita Bolotov

Abstract: Mountain hare (Lepus timidus) is a widespread species that lives throughout the continental tundra zone of Eurasia, as well as over the greater part of the northern forest zone. For a long time, the presence of the mountain hare in the fauna of the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago was assumed. However, documented evidence from the archipelago was lacking. In 2017, two fragments of the lower jaw of a single specimen were found in the Bezymyannaya Bay area on Yuzhny Island, Novaya Zemlya, Russia. This record confirms the presence of the species on the archipelago, while its status remains unclear. The jaw fragments from Novaya Zemlya contained dry meat remnants, indicating that this individual died relatively recently (i.e., no more than 10 years ago). It is likely that the species periodically visits the archipelago, without forming a viable population there.
