Abstract: We provide extensive surveys in eight estuaries along the coast of Ceará State in Northeastern Brazil, including local samples and data compiled from online data bases and literature. Samplings resulted in a checklist of the estuarine fish fauna, which recorded 126 fish species, and provides original information of some estuaries. Most of the sampled marine species are widely distributed and many are important commercial species for the artisanal fisheries. The addition of records from existing inventories and online collections increases the number of species to 245, of which 11 are threatened (critically endangered or vulnerable) and six are introduced. Our study provides an updated list of fish species of the estuaries along the semiarid coast of Brazil and is intended as a subsidy for further research, conservation and management efforts.

First reports of Megamouth Shark, Megachasma pelagios Taylor, Compagno & Struhsaker, 1983 (Lamniformes, Megachasmidae), in Peru https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/55612/ Check List 16(5): 1361-1367

DOI: 10.15560/16.5.1361

Authors: Shaleyla Kelez, Rossana Maguiño Napuri, Alejandra Mendoza Pfennig, Oswaldo Caldas Martinez, Antonio Torres Carrasco

Abstract: Megamouth Shark, Megachasma pelagios Taylor, Compagno & Struhsaker, 1983, is one of the least-known shark species worldwide. We report the encounters of four megamouth sharks: one caught in a driftnet off Piura (November 2016; sex indeterminate), one landed in Los Organos (July 2018; female), one stranded in El Ñuro (July 2018; sex indeterminate, ca 300 m total length), and one caught in a purse seine off Lambayeque (June 2019; female, total length ca 300 cm). These are the first records from Peru and expand the species’ known southern limit by 415 km. With the addition of M. pelagios, there are 67 species of sharks in Peru.

New distributional and morphological data of two species of catsharks, genus Scyliorhinus Blainville, 1816 (Carcharhiniformes, Scyliorhinidae), from the western South Atlantic https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/47130/ Check List 16(1): 47-52

DOI: 10.15560/16.1.47

Authors: Stephani M. Lopes, Luciano G. Fischer, Rodrigo C. Mazzoleni, Michael M. Mincarone

Abstract: This study provides new distributional and morphological information for two recently described species of catsharks (Carcharhiniformes, Scyliorhinidae) from Brazil. Scyliorhinus cabofriensis Soares, Gomes & Carvalho, 2016, originally described from off Cabo Frio, state of Rio de Janeiro (536 m depth) is recorded in deeper waters (647 m) off northern Rio de Janeiro, and Scyliorhinus ugoi Soares, Gadig & Gomes, 2015, previously known from the Caribbean Sea to Rio de Janeiro (depth unknown), is reported off the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, at 825 m. Morphometric data are provided for all the specimens examined.

New record of the Critically Endangered striped smooth-hound, Mustelus fasciatus (Garman, 1913) (Chondrichthyes, Triakidae), in the Southwest Atlantic https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/29536/ Check List 14(6): 1151-1153

DOI: 10.15560/14.6.1151

Authors: Juan M. Cuevas, Sebastián E. Gómez, Mirta L. Garcia

Abstract: We report the southernmost known occurrence in the Atlantic Ocean of the striped smooth-hound, Mustelus fasciatus (Garman, 1913). The shark, a female measuring 106 cm TL, was fished in warm coastal waters, with a salinity of 33,189 PSU, of central Argentina (40°52ʹ13ʺ S, 062°18ʹ42ʺ W). This report increases by 205 km southward the known range of this endemic and Critically Endangered species.

Occurrence of the rare and Endangered Ornate Eagle Ray, Aetomylaeus vespertilio (Bleeker, 1852) (Chondrichthyes, Myliobatidae), at a remote marine protected area in the Philippines https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/20838/ Check List 14(1): 1-5

DOI: 10.15560/14.1.1

Authors: Gonzalo Araujo, Sally J. Snow, Andy Cornish, Ryan Murray, Kymry Delijero, Alessandro Ponzo, Marivel Dygico

Abstract: We report the occurrence of the rare and Endangered Aetomylaeus vespertilio (Bleeker, 1852) at the remote archipelago of Cagayancillo, Palawan in the Sulu Sea, Philippines. Only 1 previous report of the species exists from the country, a juvenile specimen in the Pasil market, Cebu City in 2000. During an in-water shark and ray survey at Cagayancillo Island in April 2017, a female individual A. vespertilio with a disc width of approximately 200 cm, and a total length of approximately 400 cm was encountered along the reef’s edge at a depth of 12 m. This species wasconfirmed by its characteristic dorsal pattern of narrow stripes anteriorly and reticulated spots posteriorly. We confirm the occurrence of this rare and poorly understood species in the Sulu Sea and extend the current known range farther west than previously known.

The Largetooth Sawfish, Pristis pristis (Linnaeus, 1758), is not extirpated from Peru: new records from Tumbes https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/19913/ Check List 13(4): 261-265

DOI: 10.15560/13.4.261

Authors: Alejandra Mendoza, Shaleyla Kelez, Wilmer Gonzales Cherres, Rossana Maguiño

Abstract: The Largetooth Sawfish, Pristis pristis, was for a long time considered extirpated from Peru. However, here we report the capture of 2 individuals from the north coast of Peru, indicating that this species is still extant in Peruvian waters. Both individuals were adult-sized and their encounters occurred during the austral summer, which could indicate a seasonal presence in those waters. Gillnets are still a major threat for the species as both specimens were incidentally captured with this gear. Our finding highlights the need for continuous research, awareness, and legal protection of this species.
