First record of Cylista ornata (Holdsworth, 1855) and new records of Cylista troglodytes (Price, 1847) (Cnidaria, Actiniaria, Sagartiidae) on the Portuguese coast corroborated by genetic data

Authors: Pedro Duarte-Coelho, Carolina Miranda, Frederico Almada, Núria Teixeira, Karen Avellaneda, Joana Isabel Robalo, Ana M. Pereira

Abstract: In 2023, Cylista ornata (Holdsworth, 1855) was documented for the first time along Portugal’s west coast during a long-term monitoring program. Cylista troglodytes (Price in Johnston, 1847) was also found. These finds represent the southernmost confirmed records of both species on Europe’s continental coast. Identifications were confirmed through morphological analysis and genetic barcoding, following initial sightings during a coastal survey initiated in 2021. These sightings highlight the importance of ongoing ecological monitoring and field surveys in understanding species distribution patterns and evaluating the effects of climate change on marine biodiversity.

Abstract: We report the first records of the sea anemones Anthopleura mariscali, Anthopleura nigrescens, and Exaiptasia diaphana in the Protected Natural Area of Los Cóbanos and Punta Amapala on the coast of El Salvador. Additionally, we extend the known range of distribution of Telmatactis panamensis to south-eastern El Salvador. Each of these species is briefly described, and images of live specimens are provided. The geographic distributions of previous records of sea anemones in El Salvador are discussed. An updated list of 11 species reported in the country is provided.

Authors: Felipe Méndez-Abarca, Renzo Pepe-Victoriano, Enrique A. Mundaca

Abstract: We present two new records of the colonial cup coral Coenocyathus bowersi Vaughan, 1906 from northern Chile. Colonies were collected off the coastal of Taltal, Antofagasta Region, and off the coast of the city of Iquique, Tarapacá Region, both in northern Chile. Our finds confirm the presence of this species on the Chilean coast and extend the geographic range of this species approximately 765 km north from the only other known occurrences of C. bowersi in Chile.

Authors: Fabián H. Acuña, Ricardo González-Muñoz, Agustin Garese, Edgardo Díaz-Ferguson

Abstract: We report two species of sea anemones, Anthopleura nigrescens (Verrill, 1928) and Telmatactis panamensis (Verrill, 1869), for the first time from Parque Nacional Coiba, a large, protected area in the Pacific off Panama. In addition, we describe the external anatomical taxonomic characters and provide images of live specimens of each species. The number of sea anemones species known for Panama is updated to 57. This work constitutes the first study in the documentation of sea anemones of Coiba Island.

Update on the distribution of Isaurus tuberculatus Gray, 1828 (Cnidaria, Zoantharia) and first insight into the microanatomy and cnidom of South Atlantic populations

Check List 18(4): 849-860

DOI: 10.15560/18.4.849

Authors: Erica P. Lima, Daniele A. Vila-Nova, Carlos D. Perez, Paula B. Gomes

Abstract: The zoantharian Isaurus tuberculatus Gray, 1828 is highly variable in its morphology, and considered pantropical. As it is a shallow water and zooxanthellate species, its wide distribution has been questioned, and it is likely that the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific populations are distinct species. Here we update the distribution of this species in Brazil and provide the first description of the microanatomy and cnidom of populations in the South Atlantic. Along the Brazilian coast, the species is distributed from Ceará to Bahia, and is also in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago.

First record of Calliactis tricolor (Le Sueur, 1817) (Cnidaria, Actiniaria, Hormathiidae) in the Veracruz reef system, southwestern Gulf of Mexico

Authors: José Luis Tello-Musi, Ricardo González-Muñoz, Fabián H. Acuña, Nuno Simões

Abstract: The sea anemone Calliactis tricolor (Le Sueur, 1817) is an ecologically important member of the benthic community in coastal and coral reefs of the tropical Atlantic, particularly for their propensity to establish mutualistic symbiotic relationships with hermit crabs. This species is presumably distributed throughout the Gulf of Mexico; however, it had never been recorded in the southwestern part of the Gulf. Here we document the first record of C. tricolor in 2 coral reef localities of the Veracruz reef system, Mexico, and update the number of species of sea anemones known for the region.

First record of the invasive coral Oculina patagonica de Angelis, 1908 (Cnidaria, Scleractinia) in the Gulf of Mexico

Authors: Norberto A. Colín García, Jorge E. Campos, José L. Tello Musi, Horacio Perez-España, Xavier Chiappa Carrara

Abstract: Colonies of coral with morphology similar to that of Oculina patagonica de Angelis, 1908 were found in the National Park Veracruz Reef System (NPVRS) along the coast of Veracruz, Mexico in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The identity of these colonies as O. patagonica was confirmed by morphological and molecular analyses. Here, we document the first records of O. patagonica in the Gulf of Mexico. This species is native to the Mediterranean Sea, and could have been accidentally introduced to the Gulf of Mexico through ballast water from ships. In the NPVRS, poor environmental conditions such as polluted waters with high sedimentation, and the capability of O. patagonica to adapt could have facilitated the establishment of this species in the Gulf.

First record of Zoanthus gigantus Reimer & Tsukahara, 2006 (Anthozoa, Hexacorallia) from Indian waters, South Asia

Authors: Sonia Kumari, Pariyappanal Ulahannan Zacharia, Kannanchery Ramanathan Sreenath, Vasant Kripa, Grinson George

Abstract: Zoanthus gigantus, family Zoanthidae, is reported for the first time from south Asia. The earlier distribution of the species has been known only from Japan, China, and Taiwan waters. Colonies of Z. gigantus were noticed along Saurashtra coast, Gujarat, during a field survey, in frame of monitoring Zoantharian diversity along Indian coast. Species was identified using morphological and histological examination. The occurrence of Z. gigantus from this additional biogeographic region highlights the distribution range extension of the species.
