Extension of the distribution of Townsend’s Big-eared Bat, Corynorhinus townsendii (Cooper, 1837) (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae), to Chiapas, Mexico https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/81170/ Check List 18(2): 335-339

DOI: 10.15560/18.2.335

Authors: Issachar L. López-Cuamatzi, Yolanda Hortelano-Moncada, Jorge Ortega, Sandra M. Ospina-Garcés, Gerardo Zúñiga, M. Cristina Mac Swiney G.

Abstract: We report the first record of Townsend’s Big-eared Bat, Corynorhinus townsendii (Cooper, 1837) from Chiapas, Mexico, based on three females collected on 29 September 1979 near Ocozocoautla de Espinosa and stored in the Colección Nacional de Mamíferos of the Instituto de Biología at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. The Chiapas locality is ~180 km east of the closest previously known occurrence in Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. This extends the distribution of C. townsendii through tropical areas of southeastern Mexico and corroborates the capacity of this species to inhabit a diversity of ecosystems.

First record of Lasiurus egregius (Peters, 1870) (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae) in Paraná state, southern Brazil https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/34460/ Check List 15(6): 1099-1105

DOI: 10.15560/15.6.1099

Authors: Fernando Carvalho, Daniela Aparecida Savariz Bôlla, Karolaine Porto Supi, Luana da Silva Biz, Beatriz Fernandes Lima Luciano, Jairo José Zocche

Abstract: Lasiurus egregius (Peters, 1870) is an insectivorous bat species known from Central and South America. This species has few confirmed records throughout its distribution. Here we report the first record of L. egregius from the northern coast of Paraná state, southern Brazil. We captured a female individual of L. egregius using an ultrathin mist-net installed over a river knee, at Salto Morato Natural Reserve, municipality of Guaraqueçaba. This is the fourteenth locality with confirmed occurrence of L. egregius, being eight of them in Brazil. The knowledge on the bat fauna in Paraná has been increasing in recent decades, mainly due to the new studies in coast areas of this state. In addition to contributing to the knowledge of the bat fauna from Paraná, the new record of L. egregius reinforces the essential role of the Salto Morato Natural Reserve in conserving bats in the southern portion of the Atlantic Forest.

Abstract: We present here the first record of Histiotus velatus I. Geoffroy St.-Hilaire, 1824 for the province of Salta, Argentina. Until now, in Argentina, this species was only known from Jujuy, Corrientes, and Misiones provinces. Our record adds a fourth province to the distribution of this species in the country and the second record for the Northwestern Argentina, rising to 39 the number of bat species in Salta. We captured three adult males with mist-nets placed in Parque Nacional El Rey. This site represents one of the last largest continuous blocks of protected forests, within a region affected by the greatest anthropic transformation (e.g. agricultural development, cattle grazing) of northwestern Argentina.

First record of Eptesicus brasiliensis argentinus Thomas, 1920 (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae) in Entre Ríos province, Argentina https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/26681/ Check List 14(4): 601-607

DOI: 10.15560/14.4.601

Authors: M. Mónica Díaz, R. Tatiana Sanchez, Mirna Oviedo, Rubén Marcos Barquez

Abstract: Here, we present the first record of Eptesicus brasiliensis argentinus Thomas, 1920 for the province of Entre Ríos, Argentina. This subspecies was originally described as a full species (E. argentinus) based on its morphological features that clearly separate it from all other species of the genus. However, it was later treated as a subspecies of E. brasiliensis by Cabrera (1957), a treatment that was followed by all authors until today. Our record raises the number of bat species for the province of Entre Ríos to 21. This locality represents the fourth record for this subspecies in Argentina, after 35 years since the last known record was obtained. Its geographic range is extended by approximately 130 km to the south, which represents the southernmost known record for this subspecies, and a new ecoregion, the Espinal, is added to its distribution.

New records of bats (Chiroptera) from Santa Cruz province (Argentina) and the southernmost record of Lasiurus varius (Poeppig, 1835) for Argentina https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/20757/ Check List 13(5): 397-401

DOI: 10.15560/13.5.397

Authors: M. Mónica Díaz, Alejandro Valenzuela, Silvina Sturzenbaum, Ruben M. Barquez

Abstract: Here, we report new records for the distribution in Argentina of 3 bat species from the family Vespertilionidae: Lasiurus varius (Poeppig, 1835), Histiotus magellanicus (Philippi, 1866), and Myotis chiloensis (Waterhouse, 1838). The range of L. varius is extended by more than 800 km south of the previous known limit, representing the southernmost known occurrence for the species in Argentina. The new information for M. chiloensis fills a previous existing gap between records known from Chubut and Tierra del Fuego. Similarly, the new record of H. magellanicus also completes its known distribution in the Santa Cruz province.

New records of bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) for a southern locality of the Argentine Yungas https://checklist.pensoft.net/article/19707/ Check List 13(3): 1-8

DOI: 10.15560/13.3.2105

Authors: Santiago Gamboa Alurralde, Rubén Barquez, M. Mónica Díaz

Abstract: The forests of northwestern Argentina represent one of the most diverse areas of the country, but also one of the most affected by human activities. The southern border of this region is a transition area with the Dry Chaco Ecoregion and represents a poorly studied zone. The aim of this study was to assess the diversity of bats at the village of Escaba, southern Tucuman. Seven field surveys were conducted at five different sites. A total of 120 specimens in three families and 14 species were recorded, 12 of them representing new records for the study area, increasing the species richness of Escaba from four to 16 species. The area will be recommended as an AICOM, a status given by the RELCOM, thereby promoting actions to preserve the species of bat in the area.
