New records of Aspidoras fuscoguttatus Nijssen & Isbrücker, 1976 (Callichthyidae, Corydoradinae) from the São Francisco river basin, Brazil

Check List 19(6): 901-908

DOI: 10.15560/19.6.901

Authors: Matheus Oliveira Freitas, Adriano Hauer, Roger Henrique Dalcin, Luz Elena De la Ossa-Guerra, Roberto Ferreira Artoni, Rodrigo Leão de Moura, Vinícius Abilhoa

Abstract: Aspidoras fuscoguttatus Nijssen & Isbrücker, 1976 is a small, relatively common armored catfish considered endemic to the upper Paraná river basin. Here, based on recent collections, as well as morphological and molecular evidence, the known geographic distribution of this species is extended to the basin of the São Francisco River. Specimens were collected during biological surveys in two unnamed tributaries of the Paraopeba River, in the headwaters of the São Francisco River. The new records may be a consequence of headwater stream-captures between São Francisco and upper Paraná drainages. Continued surveys are needed to assess and mitigate natural and human impacts, including biological exchanges between basins.

The fish fauna of the upper Piraí drainage, a transposed mountain river system in southeastern, Brazil

Check List 15(1): 235-247

DOI: 10.15560/15.1.235

Authors: Victor de Brito, Paulo Andreas Buckup

Abstract: An annotated checklist of the ichthyofauna from the upper Piraí river drainage is provided. The Piraí river was a major right-bank tributary of the Paraíba do Sul river, but it has been artificially diverted to the coastal Guandu river system in southeastern Brazil to generate electric power and water for the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro. Based on our field sampling of 23 sites, 32 species belonging to 24 genera and 12 families were collected in 6 headwater tributaries of the Piraí river between 2009 and 2016. Phalloceros harpagos (Lucinda, 2008), Astyanax intermedius (Eigenmann, 1908), and Neoplecostomus microps (Steindachner, 1877b) were the most abundant and most widely distributed species in the samples. The sampled ichthyofauna is mostly composed by species from the Paraíba do Sul basin. Eight species are reported for the first time in the upper Piraí drainage, showing the importance of continuous ichthyofaunal surveys of fish in remaining areas of Atlantic Forest.

Check List 13(4): 297-303

DOI: 10.15560/13.4.297

Authors: Luiz Fernando Caserta Tencatt, Bruno Ferreira dos Santos, Maria Elina Bichuette

Abstract: The first occurrence of the armored catfishes of the subfamily Callichthynae is reported in subterranean water bodies of northern and northeastern Brazil. The records include 3 species, each occurring in 1 of the 3 caves in the central and northeastern regions of Brazil: Callichthys callichthys from Casa do Caboclo cave, Sergipe state; Hoplosternum littorale from the Gruna da Lagoa do Meio, Bahia state; and Megalechis thoracata, from Casa de Pedra cave, Tocantins state.
