First record of Thraulus (Thraulus) bellus Eaton, 1881 outside Europe (Ephemeroptera, Leptophlebiidae, Choroterpinae)

Authors: Majida El Alami, Laurent Vuataz, Kaoutar Belahcen, Nard Bennas, Michel Sartori

Abstract: We present here the first record of Thraulus (Thraulus) bellus Eaton, 1881 outside Europe. Nymphal populations of this species were discovered in a reservoir in the Middle Atlas of Morocco. The genus had previously been reported from this country but without specific identification. Although the mtDNA COI of the Moroccan population presents a divergence of approximately 6% compared to European counterparts, no significant morphological differences were found.

New records of three alien Solanum species in Morocco

Check List 20(2): 544-552

DOI: 10.15560/20.2.544

Authors: Hamid Khamar, Youssef Dallahi, Abdelmonaim Homrani Bakali

Abstract: Recent floristic surveys conducted in various regions of Morocco have revealed three new records of non-native vascular plants of the genus Solanum, namely, S. abutiloides Bitter & Lillo, S. bonariense L., and S. nitidibaccatum Bitter. The occurrence of these alien species in Morocco is documented here for the first time. For each species, information on its national habitat and distribution are given. More-over, the distinguishing morphological features of these three species are compared with the most similar species (including Moroccan Solanum species).

The first records of eleven species of the genus Megaselia Rondani, 1856 from Morocco (Diptera, Phoridae)

DOI: 10.15560/20.2.510

Authors: Fatima Zahra Sliman, R. Henry L. Disney, Kawtar Kettani

Abstract: We provide new records of scuttle flies, family Phoridae (Diptera), from Morocco, which has been very little studied. Eleven phorid species belonging to the immense genus Megaselia Rondani, 1856 are newly reported from the country, increasing the number of known species in Morocco to 12, and the number of Phoridae to 14. Information on the distribution and ecology of each species is provided.

Cotula australis Hook.f. (Asteraceae), a species newly introduced in Morocco

Check List 19(5): 661-668

Authors: Abdelilah Jbilou, Ouafae Benkhnigue, Hind Elaidi, Lahcen Zidane, Jamila Dahmani, Nadia Belahbib

Abstract: We report the discovery of Cotula australis Hook.f. for the first time in Morocco and North Africa. We found it living in the cork-oak forest of Maamora (Northwest). This species, a member of the family Asteraceae, is introduced to Morocco and has potential to be highly invasive and destructive to the native environment. We describe the distinctive taxonomic and morphological characters of this species and provide notes on its distribution, ecology, and habitat.

Phyllanthus tenellus Roxb. (Phyllanthaceae), a newly naturalising species in Morocco

Check List 18(2): 411-417

Authors: Hamid Khamar, Ouafae Benkhnigue, Allal Douira, Lahcen Zidane, Amina Ouazzani Touhami

Abstract: We report the herbaceous plant Phyllanthus tenellus Roxb., a species native to tropical regions, from Morocco. This is the first time that the genus and species are reported from Morocco and continental North Africa. We found this species to be naturalising in several localities in north-western Morocco. A morphological description, the geographic distribution, and notes on the ecology of this species are provided. We present for the first time photographs of P. tenellus from continental North Africa.

The discovery of Coptodon guineensis (Günther, 1862) (Perciformes, Cichlidae) in the Moulay Bousselham lagoon extends the species’ range 1000 km northward in Morocco

Check List 17(5): 1365-1373

DOI: 10.15560/17.5.1365

Authors: Hala Ainou, Halima Louizi, Imane Rahmouni, Antoine Pariselle, Abdelaziz Benhoussa, Ouafae Berrada Rkhami, Jean-François Agnèse

Abstract: Two specimens of Coptodon guineensis (Günther, 1862) were unexpectedly found in the Canal de Nador, Moulay Bousselham lagoon, almost 1000 km north of the Aabar River the northernmost river previously recorded. To confirm this identification nineteen measurements were recorded from each specimen and compared with other specimens of C. guineensis from Morocco and Mauritania. The COI gene was partially sequenced and compared with formerly published sequences of Coptodon species of the region. Both morphology and DNA revealed no differences with specimens from known populations of C. guineensis in Morocco.
